لاno غروَwonder أنthat جارَacted unjustly الزمانُtime وحافاand dealt unfairly
وألمَّand befell حادثُهُits calamity بكمْupon you وأطافاand circled around
No wonder that time has been unjust and oppressive,
It is no wonder time has changed and turned,
and its calamity has befallen you and circled round you.
And its events have afflicted you and revolved around you.

لمnot ينجُescape منfrom أيديhands الخطوبcalamities كِفافاwithout gain or loss
Whoever the hands of calamity have come to reach
He who has been reached by the hands of calamities,
does not escape the hands of calamity unscathed.
Will not be saved from the hands of calamities completely.

And whenever a man weighs the burden of misfortunes,
And when the weight of afflictions burdens a man,
he staggers beneath them, even when their trials are light.
He will be troubled by them lightly at first.
إنif تُفجَعواyou are bereaved أخرىthe latter part of الزمانtime بألفكمْof your dear companion
فهيfor it is المناياdeath تفجعُbereaves الألاَّفاclose companions
If in time's latter days you are bereaved of your dear companion,
If you are aggrieved again by time with your thousands,
for it is death that bereaves close companions.
It is death that aggrieves the thousands.

O Hasan, decay has not done justice to your graces;
The best did not do justice to your good deeds,
indeed, decay does not know how to be fair.
For destruction does not do justice.

Many a person who feared for you throughout your illness has
How many who feared your illness for so long
been cast by his fear into what he feared.
Cast their fear aside when they feared.

You were only a branch that came forth in leaf,
You were but a blooming branch,
fresh and tender, and soon afterward dried up.
Green, then withering rapidly after that.

If layers of earth enclose that body,
If that noble person is enveloped by the earth,
then they have surely enclosed his piety and chastity.
It has enveloped a devout and chaste man.

O mountain of learning, whose pillars were shaken
O pillar of knowledge shaken at its pillars
when you rose lofty and towered high.
When it stood tall and lofty.

Patience, sons of Salmun, patience, for these are
Patience O Banu Suleiman, patience, they
the turns of time: one is afflicted, another spared.
Are the cycles of time, so one is tested and then relieved.

Indeed, death, however it confronts humankind,
Death, however it came across people,
finds them targets for its arrows.
Found them to be targets for its arrows.

But if the events of fate kept away
any people, they would keep away from you.
From a people, they would keep away from you.
