    No riddle clouds this eloquence.

No chance for excellence, no opportunity, has passed it by.

Eloquence in which its peerless pearls were strung

by the hand of meanings, as beads may be strung.

It satisfies its hearer like provisions kept ready,

if cooked fare and baked fare should fail him.

    والصقرُ من صيدِهِ اليعفورُ والخُرَز

    In poetry, it has kept to verse of the highest rank;

and the falcon's prey includes the gazelle fawn and the hare.

Like a blade in the belly, cleaving its sides,

as leather is cut, while an awl beneath it pricks.

You took something acceptable from a fair exterior,

and beneath it, falsehood lies embedded in deceit.

And a man's traits reveal what he conceals,

like a worn-out waterskin whose stitch-holes reveal what you put inside it.

As for visiting, it is a duty; no one who

seeks to evade what is required has any refuge.

And I long for the dueling of cups,

when the drinking companions step forth toward its cups.
