May the clouds’ milk water the abode of Aleppo!

For how often it joined delight to delight!

And how many a pleasure of life was sweet

to me there, when life held no delight!

When the bloom unfurls its banners

there, its bordered cloaks and tassels,

in the morning, its fringes of silver

delight the eye, and its centers are gold.

    Its chrysolite lies between turquoise

of wondrous beauty and marvelous agate.

The wind plays with it in the early forenoon,

so it is unveiled before us as dolls are displayed.
