ماnot أناI منof صابِهits bitter ṣāb plant ولاnor سَلَعِهْits bitter salaʿ plant
Let this age curb its greed;
May this age withhold its greed
I have no share in its bitter ṣāb or salaʿ plants.
I am neither its prey nor its goods
هذاthis نظيفٌNazif إذاwhen الزمانُTime رناlooked
إليهat him ماتdied الزَّمانُTime منfrom فَزَعهits fright
This is Nazif; when Time looks
How pure it is when the age sings
at him, Time dies of fright.
The age died of fearing it
كيفhow يرومُseeks الزمانُTime غِرَّتناour unguarded moment
إِذwhen أحصَنتْناhave fortified us الحصونُthe fortresses منof خِلَعهhis robes of honor
How can Time seek to catch us unawares,
How can the age dream of deceiving us
when fortresses of his robes of honor have sheltered us?
When strongholds have guarded us from its tricks

Silk-and-wool cloth and brocade, whose patterned weave echoes
Shame and disgrace told by its masked face
the pieces of cloth this spring has woven.
This spring didn't weave any of its pieces
يزدادُgrows لمعاًin brilliance إذاwhen نواظرناour eyes
زادتincreased مساماتَناour upward straining إلىtoward لُمَعهits gleams
It grows in brilliance when our eyes
Our eyes shine brighter
strain ever higher toward its gleams.
As our glances grow sharper towards its glimmer
فزيُّناso our garb الدهرَat all times زيُّthe garb آخرَanother person فيon

So our garb at all times is another's garb on
So we adorned time with another adornment
his festival days and on his Fridays.
In its holidays and its gathering
سقياًa blessing of rain لهfor him صانعاًas a benefactor ومصطنعاًand as a protégé
أجلyes indeed وسقياًand a blessing of rain لهfor him وَمُصطنِعهand his patron
May rain bless him, as benefactor and protégé;
Quenching it, making and pretending
yes, may rain bless him and his patron.
Yes, quenching it and its pretense

He saw him following his example in noble deeds,
He saw it following favors
so he was the most illustrious among his followers.
Thus it was more malicious than its followers
