Let someone defend you against your reproacher—rather, defend me—

for your failing to meet his desire—rather, my own failing.

And greet life with joy, for I

have found life to be the days of joy.

    prepared—roast meat or stew.

And a wine jug stands before us, and ten

of the speckled ones, slaughtered and pure,

among those you would imagine, when we grow tipsy,

were daughters of the Romans in lengths of silk.

And varieties of fragrant plants, among those

you hear of—gathered roses and wallflowers.

And no Harurite keeps away when

we sit together, if you are set on Harur.

For drink gives no praise to people

who pass it round to the mathnā and zīr strings.

And a young maiden among the daughters of the Romans moves about,

bearing the daughter of roses and extracted honey.

Her two flavors come from Hatti honey

and rosewater, not pitch and tar.

Two months have passed over her, or she has gone

just a little beyond two months.

She speaks of the season of roses, not of

the kings of Persia in the earliest ages.

Brief is her life, which brings the drinking companions

through her flow to a brief life.

So rise—my soul be your ransom—and let us deflower her

by urging on the cup and the great goblet.

And let us strip her of both her jewels together:

the crimson hue and the fragrant secret.

For no day of joy, once it has passed,

will return to you until the Resurrection.
