أستغفرُ اللهَ كم ذا الجهلُ والسَّرَف

I seek God's forgiveness—what ignorance and excess this is!

I ask God's forgiveness, how much is this ignorance and excess

I seek God's forgiveness—what folly and harshness this is!

I ask God's forgiveness, how much is this violation and violence

يدعو إلى الجهل داعينا فنتبعُهُ

يدعو إلى الجهل داعينا فنتبعُهُ

يمضي على الجهل ماضينا ولا يَقف

يمضي على الجهل ماضينا ولا يَقف

Our caller calls us to ignorance, and we follow him.

Our guide calls us to ignorance, so we follow him

Whoever among us moves on persists in ignorance and does not stop.

Our leader proceeds in ignorance, does not stop

كيف امترائيَ أخلافَ السرور وقد

كيف امترائيَ أخلافَ السرور وقد

رأيتُ رُسْلَ المنايا كيف تختلف

رأيتُ رُسْلَ المنايا كيف تختلف

How can I milk the teats of joy, when

How can I pretend, enjoyments of bliss, when I have seen

I have seen how death's messengers come and go?

Messengers of death, how they differ

في كلِّ يومٍ لها جيشٌ يُروِّعنا

في كلِّ يومٍ لها جيشٌ يُروِّعنا

بشنِّ غارته فينا وينصرف

بشنِّ غارته فينا وينصرف

Every day death has an army that terrifies us

Each day an army terrifies us

by launching its raid upon us; then it withdraws.

With attacking us and withdrawing

عندي مواعظُ لو أنّي اتَّعظتُ بها

عندي مواعظُ لو أنّي اتَّعظتُ بها

مضى وأسلَفَنيها إذ مضى السَّلَف

مضى وأسلَفَنيها إذ مضى السَّلَف

I have admonitions—if only I took heed of them—

I have advice, if I had heeded it

The forebears passed on and left them to me as they passed.

It passed, left me, when the predecessors passed

لأدعونَّ بوالهفي ويا أسفي

لأدعونَّ بوالهفي ويا أسفي

إن كان يُجدي عليَّ اللهفُ والأسف

إن كان يُجدي عليَّ اللهفُ والأسف

I shall surely cry, 'Oh, my anguish! Oh, my sorrow!'

I call with longing and oh my sorrow

if anguish and sorrow can do me any good.

If longing and sorrow avail me

هي القلوبُ قد اسودّت وحقَّ لها

هي القلوبُ قد اسودّت وحقَّ لها

من الذنوب التي اسودَّت لها الصحف

من الذنوب التي اسودَّت لها الصحف

The hearts have blackened, and rightly so,

Hearts have blackened, and rightfully

from the sins that have blackened the pages,

From the sins that blackened the pages for them

حتى النزوع فحسبي ما جُنيتُ وما

حتى النزوع فحسبي ما جُنيتُ وما

اقترفتُ فكم أجني وأقترف

اقترفتُ فكم أجني وأقترف

until I desist; enough for me is what I have done and what

Just my reaping what I sowed, what I did

I have committed—how much I sin and transgress!

So much did I reap, commit

يا ويحَ نفسي أَغَرَّتْها سلامَتُها

يا ويحَ نفسي أَغَرَّتْها سلامَتُها

إن السلامةَ مقرونٌ بها التلف

إن السلامةَ مقرونٌ بها التلف

Alas for my soul! Has its safety deceived it?

Oh my soul, allured by its safety

Indeed, safety is bound to destruction.

Safety coupled with ruin

بئس الثراءُ ثراءً خَلْفَهُ عَدَمٌ

بئس الثراءُ ثراءً خَلْفَهُ عَدَمٌ

بئس الشبابُ شباباً خَلْفَهُ خَرَف

بئس الشبابُ شباباً خَلْفَهُ خَرَف

Wretched is wealth—wealth followed by destitution!

Evil is wealth, behind it nothingness

Wretched is youth—youth followed by senility!

Evil is youth, behind it senility

يا خائفاً ليس تثنيه مخافته

يا خائفاً ليس تثنيه مخافته

وعارفاً وهو في ذا ليس يَعْتَرِف

وعارفاً وهو في ذا ليس يَعْتَرِف

O fearful one whose fear does not restrain him,

Oh fearful one, his fear does not dissuade him

and one who knows, yet in this does not confess!

Oh knower, but he does not admit

لا سيرَ إلا بزادٍ يُسْتَعانُ به

لا سيرَ إلا بزادٍ يُسْتَعانُ به

فاستأنفِ الزادَ إن الزّادَ مُؤتَنَف

فاستأنفِ الزادَ إن الزّادَ مُؤتَنَف

There is no journey without provisions to rely on.

No journey without provision to aid

So renew your provisions, for provisions can be renewed.

So prepare provision, for provision is renewable
