I say, having left Homs, while there gleamed
I say, as I left Homs and Damascus dawned
Stately hills that promise us Damascus,
Upon us, greeting us, aloof and demure,
وَأُدْمُand the white ones المهارِيthe Mahri camels تنبريdart forward برحالِناwith our saddles

And the white Mahri camels dart forward with our saddles,
The camels urging us on with their saddles
As falcons dart after weak birds,
As falcons urge the partridges they lure,

When they place Lebanon to their right,
When you make Lebanon your right hand’s ornament,
And Sanir is on their left:
And your left cradles Mount Sanir,
فإِنّfor indeed فؤاديmy heart طائرٌflying أوor فإِنَّهfor indeed it
إليكمْto you (plural) بجثمانيwith my body معاًtogether سيطيرwill fly
For my heart is flying—or indeed it
Then my heart will be a bird in flight or else
Will fly to you together with my body.
My body and heart will fly to you entire.
