موثَقٌ من صبابتي في وثاقِ

I am in al-Sham, and my love is in Iraq.

I am in Damascus while love is in Iraq

Fettered by my ardent longing, in bonds.

Bound by my youth in shackles

ذو اشتياق ألتذُّ بَردَ دموعي

ذو اشتياق ألتذُّ بَردَ دموعي

لو وفى بَردُها بحرِّ اشتياقي

لو وفى بَردُها بحرِّ اشتياقي

Full of yearning, I savor the coolness of my tears—

With yearning I quench my thirst with my tears

if only their coolness were equal to the heat of my yearning.

If only their coldness could quench my yearning

ليس يدري الفراق ما لوعةُ العش

ليس يدري الفراق ما لوعةُ العش

قِ فيرثي للوعةِ العشاق

قِ فيرثي للوعةِ العشاق

Parting knows nothing of love's anguish,

The parting knows not the agony of love

and so cannot pity the anguish of lovers.

It would not part lovers if it only knew

لو درى لا درى الفراق لما فرّ

لو درى لا درى الفراق لما فرّ

ق بين المشتاق والمشتاق

ق بين المشتاق والمشتاق

Had parting known—may it never know!—it would not have separated

I will invoke curses upon this parting and pray

one yearning lover from another.

For reunion, hoping for the days of reunion

سوف أدعو على الفراق وأدعو

سوف أدعو على الفراق وأدعو

للتلاقي سَقياً لعهد التلاقي

للتلاقي سَقياً لعهد التلاقي

I shall pray against parting, and pray

Surely He who ordained this parting is able

for reunion: may rain bless the days of reunion!

To make separation taste its own torment

وإنَّ من قَدَّر الفراق قديرٌ

وإنَّ من قَدَّر الفراق قديرٌ

أن يُذيقَ الفراق طعمَ الفراق

أن يُذيقَ الفراق طعمَ الفراق

And surely the one who ordained parting is able

to make parting taste the flavor of parting.
