إنif كانwas بدرthe full moon الدجىthe night's darkness يشاكلهresembles him
إن كان بدر الدجى يشاكله
فماyet not لبدرfor the full moon الدجىthe night's darkness مناقبهhis fine qualities
فما لبدر الدجى مناقبه
If the full moon of the dark night resembles him,
If the full moon of darkness resembles him,
Still, the full moon of the dark night lacks his graces:
Then the full moon has no virtues.
لاneither وجنتاهhis two cheeks لهbelong to it ولاnor فمهhis mouth
لا وجنتاه له ولا فمه
ولاnor لهbelong to it عينهhis eye وحاجبهand his eyebrow
ولا له عينه وحاجبه
It has neither his cheeks nor his mouth,
No, he has no cheeks or mouth for him,
Nor does it have his eye or his eyebrow.
No eyes or eyebrows for him either.
ذاكthat one الذيwho طالبتdemanded محاسنهhis charms
ذاك الذي طالبت محاسنه
بوصلهfor union with him منwhoever غداset out يطالبهto seek him
بوصله من غدا يطالبه
That is he whose charms demanded
He whom I sought his beauties,
Union with him from whoever set out to seek him.
Will seek to meet him tomorrow.
