His phantom visited only as he himself visits—
His apparition came not but like his illusion,
in haste, fearing his lover because of his fear.
A restless phantom fearing its lover's delusion,

His 'perhaps' and 'will' have grown cheap; but it is only
"Perhaps" and "if only" grew easy, for my misery
sorrow that his 'perhaps' and 'will' have cheapened.
Grew easy with "perhaps" and "maybe,"

Beauty's sanctuary in his face is the sacred precinct
The shrine of beauty with his face made it sacred,
to whose Mina and Khayf the pilgrims journey by night.
To which the pilgrims pace, seeking its grade,

He is girt with a sword: whenever you behold him,
Girded with a sword, when you see him,
the lids of his eyes are the baldrics of his sword.
His eyelids sheathe his sword,
ياO ذاyou الذيwho أضحىhas become فؤاديmy heart ضَيْفَهُhis guest

O you whose guest my heart has become,
O you whom my heart hosts,
what excuse has one who fails to honor his guest's rights?
No excuse for one who disrespects his host,

Is your cheek's share of the spring of our days
What share of our springtime did your cheek obtain?
anything but like our hearts' share of its summer?
Only what our hearts gained of its warmth,

How many have said, while my blood was mingled with my tears,
How many cry, and my blood flows with my tears
when they saw my eyelids' passion for mingling it:
When they saw my eyes' passion set ablaze,

“Did he weep over the beloved's fairness when it ended,
I cry for the justice of the beloved when it passes,
grieving for it, or did he weep because of his injustice?”
Is it grief for it, or tears for the injustice?
