يسومنيَ السلوَّ ولن أُطيعَهْ

ولا نَفسي له بالمسْتَطيعَهْ
He urges me to forget my love, but I will not obey him;
He saddens me with his coldness, though I cannot obey him,
nor can my soul comply with him.
Nor can I force my soul to be able to do so.

وقلبي ليس يُملَكُ بالخديعة
And he tries to beguile my heart away from love's deep roots,
And he deceives my heart about the delight of love,
but my heart cannot be won by deception.
Yet my heart cannot be possessed through deception.

My reprover, I will listen to no reproach;
I am not listening to blame, so do not blame me,
so reproach someone with a listening ear instead.
For blame from one with hearing ears other than you is baseless.

And my beloved is he for whom I proclaimed my love, in admiration
And my love is wondrous to those who spread tales of love,
of him, and commanded my tears to reveal it.
And I commanded my tears to spread it.

Indeed, my tears have cast off their bridle for him,
Indeed, my tears have cloaked it with honor,
though my tears had never been unbridled.
And my tears were never disgraceful.

Oblige me with any price but to sell it.

Save me from the estrangement of one disdainful
of what a lover suffers through estrangement.
Of what the lover encounters of estrangement.

For you have entrusted longing to a heart of mine
For in you I placed my passion in a heart
to which one journeys for a trust's safekeeping.
That rushes to keep the entrustment.

And your two eyes hastened from people
who delight in hastening acts of kindness.
Who enjoy hastening to bestow favor.

I asked Mudahrij, 'What is generosity among you?'
I asked a wine-pourer, “What is generosity in you?”
They answered, 'Generosity is an inheritance we shall not squander.'
They said, “Generosity is an inheritance we will not waste.”

The young inherit it from the old,
It is inherited by the young from the old
as peoples inherit religious law.
As nations inherit the sacred law.

The Prophet's nickname—and it suffices as a lofty title—
for one bearing his exalted honorific name.
For one nicknamed with his lofty nickname.

A youth: if he summons the virgins of glory,
A youth, if the choicest glories call him,
they answer him, attentive and obedient.
They obey him while listening and obedient.

Affection is the means of one who seeks his affection,
My love for him is a means for one who loves him,
a bond he invokes—and that is means enough.
And that is enough of a means for you.

He has a generosity bent on ruining his wealth,
He has generosity whereby loss is tempting,
yet that is gain, not calamity.
And that is the real prize, not the loss.

He named it his bedfellow, any other bedfellow but it.

When gifts dwindle through miserliness,
When gifts shrink from stinginess,
we receive enormous bounty from him.
We get from him the ample and plentiful.

He redressed my fortune's reversal when he saw that I
He brought together my heart when it was
had found its hideous harshness abhorrent.
Disgusted by the abhorrent coldness of fate.

So I gained profits from estates without taxes,
enjoying their profit without loss.
Achieving gains from them without loss.

Want is barred from my house, so my house
through that protection, stands on impregnable peaks.
Through that barring is in inaccessible heights.
