Have you seen anything lovelier than the eyes of the narcissus,
Have you seen eyes more beautiful than narcissus flowers,
or than their exchanging glances amid the gathering?
Or those who glance at them in the middle of the gathering?

Camphor eyelids, endowed with eyes
As if they were moons of night that stared closely,
of saffron, soft to the touch.
At suns of darkness above a smooth branch.

And they seem like moons of night encircling
Shimmering in the flickering of their shadow,
suns in cloudy gloom, upon a smooth branch.
Yearning for the glance of the watcher.

Tear-brimmed in their shimmering shade,
So if the winds uncover them they breathe,
they gaze like a keenly discerning watcher.

And when the winds envelop them, they breathe
And it was said they drew close to each other one day,
forth a scent like musk—what a breath!
Like an intimate to an intimate.

And their closeness to one another mirrored,
This and that embraced in a gathering
one day, the closeness of one companion to another.
Of love, while she embraced in an orchard.

This one and that embraced in a gathering
And if you doze off from the wine you see them
out of love, while those embraced in a planting bed.
Yearn to you with eyes that did not sleep.

gazing at you with eyes that have not grown drowsy.

for affection from you, and a word that brings despair.
