Have you not yearned for the olive trees of Bityas,
Oh how I yearned for the olive orchards of Batiyas
and Salihiyya, with its cypresses and myrtle?
With their noble cypress and poplar trees

Whoever one day forgets his bond with them both, I am no friend of his,
Whoever forgets them one day, I am no friend of his
even if the days grow long for the one who forgets.
However long the years pass among people

O homeland! It was one of the best homelands when
I sat there among my companions,
I sat in it, relaxed amongst friends

إِلاَّ استدلُّوا على وجدي بأنفاسي
scarcely could I hide from them my passion for its narcissi,
I could barely conceal my love for it and my ardour
but they discerned my passion from my sighs.
Except they guessed my passion from my breaths

The birds' melodious singing in the trees awakens me
The birds singing in the trees used to wake me
when their cups seek to make me drowsy.
When their cups stirred me from slumber

The description of the hills, could that be wrong?

And when someone told me one day, 'Sober up!' I said to him:
And someone saying to me, awaken one day, I said to him
'From love's intoxication, or the cup's intoxication?'
Is it from the drunkenness of love or from the drunkenness of wine?

I drink no wine except from the hands of a gazelle fawn,
I only drink pleasure from the hand of a gentle
slender as a bān-tree shoot, swaying gracefully,
Gazelle-eyed one, supple as a willow wand

O you who describe the garden, preoccupied with that over
dwellings grown desolate after companionship,
Places made desolate after the company of friends

Say to the one who blamed it: Do you see anyone bored
of the loveliest garden except the loveliest of people?
With the beauty of the garden other than people?
