Abu Ali, we know your character to be

    Free from impurities and defilement.

You promised me the dog; when you promised, you had already

Described it to me with the qualities of sword and shield.

And you said, “Swifter than an arrow to a target,

When spurred on, and more brilliant than a firebrand’s glow.

So make it a planting, and reap fruit from its offspring,

For it is what we owe—the finest stock to plant.”

Until, when word after word had aroused in me

A longing that binds the soul’s anguish to every breath,

You shut, by breaking your promise, a door that had stood open

Before then, through warm affection and companionship.
