محفوفة الظلماء بالأنجم
And a night like a patterned coverlet,
its darkness fringed with stars.
تعلقclung الصبحdawn بأرجائهاto its edges
تعلق الصبح بأرجائها
تعلقthe clinging of الأشقرthe chestnut steed بالأدهمto the black steed
تعلق الأشقر بالأدهم
Dawn clung to its edges,
as a chestnut steed clings to a black one.
عدلتI dealt equally فيهاin it بينbetween خمرينtwo wines منof
عدلت فيها بين خمرين من
خمرwine العناقيدِthe grape clusters وخمرand wine الفمthe mouth
خمر العناقيدِ وخمر الفم
That night I gave equal due to two wines:
the wine of grape clusters and the wine of the mouth.
تناولtook الجامthe goblet يديmy hand منfrom يَدَيْthe two hands of
تناول الجام يدي من يَدَيْ
موشيةa woman adorned الراحةthe palm والمعصمand the wrist
موشية الراحة والمعصم
My hand took the goblet from the hands
of a woman whose palm and wrist were adorned.
شبهتI likened ذوبthe liquid of الراحthe wine جامهاits goblet
شبهت ذوب الراح جامها
بذوبto the molten metal of دينارa gold dinar علىupon درهمa silver dirham
بذوب دينار على درهم
I likened the liquid wine in its goblet
to a molten gold dinar upon a silver dirham.
