Would that Time, which condemned lovers

to parting, were afflicted with parting’s burning heat.

How many silent ones, their eyes bidding farewell,

and motionless ones, their hearts embracing,

and drunken ones to whom separation gave a cup,

wronging them with it—separation, the most unjust cupbearer!

Time came forth with armies of estrangement,

so they met it with armies of longing.
