وشامتٍand a gloater بأبيover Abu إسحاقَIshaq قلتُI said لهمto them
إنif ماتَhe died فالموتُthen death محتومٌinevitable علىfor البشرhumankind
To a gloater over Abū Isḥāq, I said to them all:
And to those gloating over Abu Ishaq, I said:
If he has died, death is decreed for all humankind.
If he has died, death is inevitable for humankind.
مضىhe departed مُضِيَّthe passing of سحابٍa cloud غادرتْit left behind أَثَراًa trace
فأنتَbut you تمضيpass on بلاwithout عَيْنٍa visible presence ولاnor أثرa trace
He passed as a cloud passes, leaving a trace;
He departed as a cloud departs, leaving a trace;
but you will pass with neither substance nor trace.
but you pass on without a visible sign or trace.
فقدانُthe loss of مثلكِsomeone like you فقدانthe loss of الغمامِةthe cloud إذwhereas
فيin فَقْدِهlosing him هوhe himself فَقْدthe loss of السمعِhearing والبصرand sight
The loss of one like you is the loss of the raincloud, for
The loss of one like you is the loss of a cloud, whereas
in losing him lies the loss of hearing and sight.
in losing him lies the loss of hearing and sight.
إذاif السهاSuha لمhas not يُطِفْcircle طَيْفُthe specter of الكسوفِthe eclipse بهaround it
وقدand indeed رأيتَyou have seen كسوفَthe eclipse of الشمسِthe sun والقمرand the moon
If eclipse’s phantom has never visited al-Suhā,
If the specter of eclipse has not circled Suha,
you have indeed seen the sun and moon eclipsed.
yet you have seen the sun and moon eclipsed.
وفيand in السوادِthe blackness سوادِthe blackness of الدُّورِthe houses مَنْبَهَةٌa reminder

And amid the blackness, the dwellings’ darkness calls attention
And in the blackness—the blackness of houses—is a reminder
to the whiteness of radiant virtues in the graves.
of the whiteness of the pure virtues in the graves.
