These are tears from black and white alike,

too far from drying for anyone to dry them.

by graves at al-Habis or al-ʿArid.

opposite the site of their luxuriant meadows.

and in Aleppo, anguish upon anguish.

I watch over her grave, tenderly concerned for it,

as a nurse cares for the sick.

And to the last of nights, my bed is made

stony by the memory of her stony bed.

    وهذا الدهرُ مردودُ القروض

    O my only one, you were returned—you had been a loan;

and Time is repaid the loans it makes.

How many a wounded heart you have made raw

with grief for you, and how many a broken bone you have broken!

And how many a weary eye you left behind,

and how many a downcast eye you left behind!

And some patience rises when it stumbles,

but my patience without you has no power to rise.

O birds of the branches, listen to my lament,

and rehearse its like—rehearse, if you wish.

And O wild beasts of the desert, come thirsty

to my tears: drink deep of them and wade through them.

My grief has hurled me into grief's depths

for a beloved now a companion to the depths.

whose choking anguish bars the way to verse.

I am stirred and cry out in that same measure.

And I tell my eye: overflow, and overflow still more!

May I lose you, eye, if you do not overflow!

Ah, you who persist in biting me with blame

for my anguish, with biting blame—

shall I wink at forgetfulness with an eye that has forgotten,

while any eye still gleams above the earth?

Then loyalty would turn to treachery for me,

and I would not count it a duty among duties.
