    طرازُهُ شاهدُهُ في الطُّرْزِ

    This hawk of yours is of the finest cloth;

Its pattern vouches for it among embroidered fabrics.

With a hooked beak and a stout ankle,

And a talon no different from a leatherworker's awl,

Clad as if in closely woven silk,

Or like the rice-patterned onyx of Yemen,

Rich in spurs, fierce in striking.

When we drove the birds together, drive after drive,

At the bottom of the plain and the crest of the rise,

With all of us standing in our stirrups,

    Listening for the faintest sound,

All whispered speech abandoned, save for winks,

It returned to us with partridges and geese,

From a flinty mountain and a waterlogged meadow,

Their skins bearing the marks of punctures.

From it a cloud of torment loomed before us,

Snatching their lives away, despoiling them.

Then the pot hissed with the fiercest hissing,

Its bulk crouched as a she-goat crouches,

Tossing the limbs in the swiftest leaps.

O Ja'far, wearer of the crown of glory,

O my marketplace, my estate, my treasure,

And my sword, my keen spear, my mace,

Whoever has a safeguard, you are my safeguard.

Of Hashim, at the very height of its glory,

You stir to generosity without being stirred.
