أغْضَبْتُI angered مَنْthe one whom أهْوَىI love علىin السُّكْرِdrunkenness
وقلتُand I said ماwhat قلتُI said وماand not أدريI know
I angered the one I love while drunk,
I angered the one I love while drunk,
And said what I said, unaware.
And said what I said, unaware.
فإِنso if جفاhe shuns أحسنَhe does right أوor إنif عفاhe forgives
لمnot أعفُI forgive عنwith regard to نفسيmyself إلىuntil الحشرِthe Resurrection
If he shuns me, he does right; or if he pardons me,
So if he shuns me, he does right; or if he forgives,
I shall not pardon myself until the Resurrection.
I will not forgive myself until the Resurrection.
ياO أسَدُAsad اهجرنيَforsake me أوor نشتفيwe find relief
وَتَشْتَفِيand you take revenge مِنِّيَon me بالهجرthrough estrangement
O Asad, shun me until we are reconciled
O Asad, forsake me, or we may find relief,
And you have taken satisfaction against me through estrangement;
And you take your revenge on me through estrangement.
فهجرُfor estrangement يومٍa day منكَfrom you أوor ساعةٍan hour
مُقَلِّبٌturning over قلبيmy heart علىupon الجمرthe glowing coals
For one day’s estrangement from you—or even an hour’s—
For a day of estrangement from you, or an hour,
Turns my heart over live coals.
Turns my heart upon the glowing coals.
