O you who complain of care, calamities, and misfortunes,

Banish cares with the mother of revelry and rapture.

For sometimes the cupbearer hands it to me, and I drink it—

Wine that brings relief from sorrows and distress.

And he showered the cup with water from his ewers,

So he made pearls sprout in a land of gold.

The company glorified God when they saw a marvel:

Light from water within a fire of grapes.

By God, what a night—the beloved visited in secret!

Were it not for the veil, they would have thought him one of the shooting stars.

O night of time's youth that I was blessed to enjoy!

Would that the parting of its hair had not turned gray with dawn!

How many favors we owe to wine and the fair ones,

From which we draw gratitude until the end of the ages.
