أتَصْبِرُcan you endure? عنّيwithout me ولاwhile not أصْبِرُI endure
وتهجرُنيand you forsake me حينَwhen لاnot أهْجُرُI forsake
Can you bear being apart from me, while I cannot,
You are impatient with me, while I am patient,
and forsake me when I do not forsake you,
And you shun me, while I do not shun.
وتضمرُand you harbor ليtoward me فيin الهوىlove جَفْوَةًcoldness
وأنتwhile you عليمٌfully aware بماof what أُضْمِرI harbor within
and harbor coldness toward me in love,
You harbor malice towards me in love,
though you know well what I harbor within?
While you know full well what I harbor.
لئنif indeed كنتَyou are بالصدِّwith rejection مستهتَراًobsessed
فإنيَthen indeed I بالوصلِwith union مُسْتَهْتَرam obsessed
If you are obsessed with rejection,
If you are nonchalant in your aloofness,
then I am obsessed with union.
I am nonchalant in my attachment.
إذاwhen الليلُthe night أسبلَlet fall سترَthe veil الظلامِdarkness
باحتْspoke openly دموعيmy tears بماof what أسْتُرI conceal
When night lets fall the veil of darkness,
When night lets down the veil of darkness,
my tears reveal what I conceal.
My tears flow with what I conceal.
فكمand how many ليَfor me منof زفرةِa sigh فيin الفؤادِthe heart
تُطْوَىis folded away ومنand of عَبْرَةٍa tear تُنْشَرis unfolded
And how many a sigh I have within my heart,
So I have many a sigh in my heart,
folded away, and how many a tear is unfolded!
Suppressed, and many a teardrop shed.
ولمand did not تجرِflow منfrom مقلتيmy eye أَدْمُعٌtears
عليكfor you ولكنْbut جَرَتْflowed أبْحُرseas
And it was not tears that flowed from my eye
No tears have flowed from my eyelids for you,
for you, but seas that flowed.
But oceans have flowed within.
ترىyou see لوعةًanguish تقتضيcalls forth لوعةًanguish
وليلاًand a night يطولُgrows long ولاand not يَقْصُرgrows short
You see anguish calling forth more anguish,
I see anguish met with anguish,
and a night that lengthens and does not grow short.
Endless nights that never shorten.
وماand not ليfor me إذاwhen لَعِبَplayed الشوقُlonging بيwith me
سوىexcept أَنْthat أُناديكI call to you ياO جعفرJaʿfar
And when longing toys with me, I have nothing
When longing toys with me,
but to call to you, O Jaʿfar.
All I can do is call your name, O Ja'far!
وأَشْعُرُand I am aware بالشوقِof longing حتىuntil يزيدَit increases
فَيُغْمَىthen fainting comes عليَّupon me ولاand not أَشْعُرI am aware
And I feel longing until it grows,
I feel such longing that it overwhelms me,
then I swoon and feel nothing.
And I swoon, unaware.
فاشكوso I complain منof الشوقِlonging ماwhat قدalready علمتَyou have known
وماand what لستَyou do not تَعْلَمُهُknow it أَكْثَرgreater
So I complain of the longing you have known,
So I complain of longing, what you know,
and what you do not know is greater.
And even more, what you do not know.
أرىI see خِنصريmy little finger هَجَرَتْhas forsaken خاتَميmy ring
فماso not تصلُtouches الخاتمَthe ring الخنصرthe little finger
I see that my little finger has forsaken my ring;
I see my wristlet has abandoned my seal-ring,
so the little finger no longer touches the ring.
So the wristlet cannot reach the seal.
علىdespite أَنthe fact that سُقْميmy sickness لهit has موردٌa way in
ولكنَّهbut it ماnot لهit has مَصْدَرa way out
Though my sickness has a way in,
My sickness has a wellspring,
yet it has no way out.
But no source.
ومماand among what شجانيَgrieved me كلَّall الشَّجَىgrief
حذارُكyour wariness غيرَother than الذيwhat تحذرyou fear
And among what has caused me utter grief
Of all my agonies, the greatest
is your guarding against something other than what you fear.
Is your wariness, other than what you are wary of.
فإنso if كنتyou are غرَّاًinexperienced بأمرِin the matter of الهوىlove
فهذاthen this لمثلكfor one like you لاnot يُنْكَرis deemed strange
So if you are inexperienced in matters of love,
If you are deluded by passion’s matter,
this is no surprise in one like you.
This cannot be denied one like you.
فياso, O شادناًa fawn أحورَdark-eyed, with clear whites المقلتينthe two eyes
بلrather دونَهُbeneath him الشادنُthe fawn الأحورthe dark-eyed one
So, O fawn with lustrous dark eyes—
O you who dyed my eyelids the deepest black,
nay, the dark-eyed fawn falls short of him.
Nay, the deepest black itself you dyed.
هنيّاًsweet لكَfor you النومُsleep ياO سيديmy lord
فماfor not مَنْone who ينامُsleeps كَمَنْlike one who يَسْهَرstays awake
May sleep be sweet to you, O my lord,
Sleep is forbidden to you, my master,
for one who sleeps is not like one who lies awake.
For how can one who is sleepless sleep?
