أيُّ بدر نأى علينا بزوغُهْ
ذاكthat بدرٌa full moon أعياdefied المحاقَthe moon's dark phase بلوغُهْreaching it
ذاك بدرٌ أعيا المحاقَ بلوغُهْ
What full moon is this whose rising lies so far from us?
That is a full moon beyond the reach of waning.
غصُنٌa bough صيغَwas fashioned منfrom ضياءٍradiance كفاناsufficed us
غصُنٌ صيغَ من ضياءٍ كفانا
كلِّevery نوعٍkind منof الضياءِradiance مَصوغهhis fashioned form
كلِّ نوعٍ من الضياءِ مَصوغه
A bough fashioned from light; enough for us,
In place of every kind of radiance, is his fashioned form.
صيغfashioned الحسنُbeauty وردَthe roses of خدّيهhis two cheeks حتىuntil
صيغ الحسنُ وردَ خدّيه حتى
صيغfashioned الأرضَthe earth منfrom دميmy blood مصبوغهits dyed creation
صيغ الأرضَ من دمي مصبوغه
Beauty fashioned the roses of his cheeks, until
Its dyed creation fashioned the earth from my blood.
اقتضىcalled for وَصفَهhis description القريضُverse فماso not يبreaches (first part)
اقتضى وَصفَه القريضُ فما يب
لغُreaches (remainder) فيهconcerning him منof القريضverse بليغهits eloquent verse
لغُ فيه من القريض بليغه
Verse called for his description, yet
Even its most eloquent cannot do him justice.
سحرُthe sorcery of لحظٍa glance ماnot كادnearly يلدغُit stings إلاexcept
سحرُ لحظٍ ما كاد يلدغُ إلا
خاضplunged فيinto أبحرseas المناياdeaths لديغهits stung victim
خاض في أبحر المنايا لديغه
The sorcery of a glance: no sooner does it sting
Than its victim plunges into seas of death.
رُغتُI turned aside عمَّنfrom whoever يلومُblames فيهfor him وألفىand he found
رُغتُ عمَّن يلومُ فيه وألفى
ليfor me عذراًan excuse عنaway from الملامِreproach يُريغُهdiverts him
لي عذراً عن الملامِ يُريغُه
I evaded whoever blamed me for him; he found
An excuse for me that turned him from reproach.
فارتدائيso my donning فيهfor him رداءَthe robe of الهوىlove الساthe ample (first part)
فارتدائي فيه رداءَ الهوى السا
بغample (remainder) مماamong that which يدينُholds as a creed مثليone like me سبوغُهits fullness
بغ مما يدينُ مثلي سبوغُه
So I don for him the ample robe of love;
Its fullness is a creed for one like me.
لاdo not تٌرغنيlure me إلىtoward السلوِّforgetting love فإنيfor I
لا تٌرغني إلى السلوِّ فإني
لستُI am not ممنamong those who يروغturns aside حينwhen تروغهyou try to sway him
لستُ ممن يروغ حين تروغه
Do not lure me into forgetting, for I
Am not one who turns away when you try to turn him.
فرَّغemptied الشوقُlonging منof سوىother than الشوقlonging قلباًa heart
فرَّغ الشوقُ من سوى الشوق قلباً
كانwas بَدْءَthe beginning of اشتغالِهِits preoccupation تفريغُهits emptying
كان بَدْءَ اشتغالِهِ تفريغُه
Longing emptied a heart of everything but longing;
Its emptying was the beginning of its preoccupation.
فإذاso if ماemphatic particle أساغcould stomach خلقٌanyone سُلُوّاًforgetting
فإذا ما أساغ خلقٌ سُلُوّاً
عنof حبيبa beloved فلستُthen I am not ممنamong those who يُسيغهcan stomach it
عن حبيب فلستُ ممن يُسيغه
So if anyone can stomach forgetting
A beloved, I am not one who can stomach it.
