O you in whom prestige and worth have reached their height,

And in whom nomads and townsfolk take pride,

And whose stature is too great to be encompassed

By his eulogist's praise, in verse or prose.

Indeed, I obeyed you in a matter in which I obeyed no one else,

But the one who holds command refused it.

And I said: Why should I not yield my reins to one

Whose abundant kindness never ceases to engulf me?

Behold, Badr, Abu al-Najm, who shines for us—

Neither the star nor the full moon is his equal among us.

So indulge me in this, for I have no one to pardon me,

If pardon from you should prove unattainable.

For you are my treasure in hardship and prosperity,

And the treasure of all who have any treasure in life.
