    I plunged both hands through it into a damning oath:

    and their ravages have confined me to my lair,

    my wild nature has never, through the days, grown familiar

    with any creature among companions but you.

    Nor have I been made to forget your mending of my wing,

    and your letting me follow my nature and disposition,

    and your granting me safety among drinking companions,

    when they feared the clashing of cups,

    and your favoring me with kindness that was sweeter

    and more delightful to souls than their own lives.

    Conversation like what the rainclouds poured forth,

    so its water quenched the fire of frowns.

    whenever they wander through them, among suns.

    لدى متطَعّمِ الريقِ المسوس

    More delicious to taste than the sweet Euphrates

    to one tasting brackish saliva;

    وأجملُ من نعيمٍ بعد بُوس

    and more beautiful than reunion after estrangement,

    and lovelier than bliss after misery.

    that had long lain with heads bowed,

    مكفنةً بأكفانِ الطروس

    and literary arts that revived, though they had been dead,

    shrouded in the winding sheets of manuscript pages.

    transmuting time's base substance;

    إذا جَرَّتْ لنا حَبْلَ الشَّموس

    and a resolve by which the nights are enslaved,

    when they pull against us like a restive steed on a rope;

    before it, like those laid low by strong old wine.

    And does the whiteness of ivory grow finer until

    it is joined to the blackness of ebony?
