ألْيَنُ مسّاً أم خَدُّكَ الأصْفَر

ألْيَنُ مسّاً أم خَدُّكَ الأصْفَر

By God, tell me: is your red cheek

In God's name, tell me, does your red cheek

softer to the touch, or your yellow cheek?

Or your yellow one feel softer to the touch?

جعفرُ أحسنت في غنائِكَ بل

جعفرُ أحسنت في غنائِكَ بل

زدتَ على المحسنين يا جعفر

زدتَ على المحسنين يا جعفر

Jaʿfar, you have sung well—nay,

Jafar, you have excelled in your singing

you have surpassed those who excel, O Jaʿfar.

You have surpassed those who excel, O Jafar!

أطربتنا لا خلوتَ من طربٍ

أطربتنا لا خلوتَ من طربٍ

أسْكَرْتَ منّا من كانَ لا يَسْكَر

أسْكَرْتَ منّا من كانَ لا يَسْكَر

You enraptured us—may you never lack rapture;

You have delighted us, you are never without delight

you intoxicated those among us who never got drunk.

You have intoxicated those of us not prone to intoxication

لفظُكَ مِسْكٌ وعنبرٌ ومتى

قيسَ به المسك قطُّ والعنبر

Your speech is musk and ambergris—and when

أحسنتَ أحسنتَ في الغناءِ نعم
