    كأنه ليلٌ عليها عاكفُ

    A delicate maiden, with mantles of her hair;

    As though it were a night lingering over her.

    إذا مَشت ترفعه الروادف

    Bordered cloaks fall short of its ends;

    When she walks, her buttocks lift it.

    Ah, what a night, whose dawn is the sides of her neck!

    A delicate maiden, with rare delights in her beauty:

    For her glance is a spearman, a swordsman,

    And her speech is lutes and musical instruments.

    A full moon in darkness, her handmaids its stars.

    No doubt I am perishing for love of her.
