لمdid not أنْسَهُI forget him ودموعُهُand his tears تتحدَّرُstream down
حَذَرَfor fear of العتابِreproach ولونهُand his complexion يتغيَّرchanges
I have not forgotten him, his tears streaming down,
in fear of reproach, his complexion changing.
زِيدَwas heightened احمرارُthe redness الخدِّof the cheek شدَّةَintensity of حُمْرَةٍredness
فغداso it became المورَّدthe rose-tinted part منهof him وهوwhile it was مُعَصْفَرsafflower-dyed
His cheek's blush was heightened to a fiercer red,
so his rose-tinted cheek became safflower-dyed.
وكأَنَّand as though فيضَthe flood الدمعِof tears فيupon وَجَناتِهhis cheeks
دُرٌّpearls علىupon جنباتِthe edges of وردٍa rose يُنْثَرare scattered
And the flood of tears upon his cheeks seemed like
pearls scattered along the edges of a rose.

He weeps, and tears are plain in my eye;
and when he tries to speak, his expression changes.

At times he rushes to answer, hastening
toward me; at others he is too tongue-tied to answer me.

And sometimes he keeps his eyelids lowered
in shyness; at other times he looks again,

أنَthat الذيwhat بيafflicts me منْfrom هواهlove of him أكثرis greater
deeming my reproach of him excessive, though he sees
that what I suffer from love of him is greater.

So I deliberately clasped him to me, as though he were
a bough with a full moon shining at its top.
وجعلتُand I began منfrom وجدٍpassionate longing أُكَفْكِفُI wipe away عبرةًa tear

And out of longing I began to wipe away a tear
that flowed, while in my heart was a flame of ambergris.

I kept sipping his saliva, as though
ambergris had been blended into it, such was its fragrance,

فيin خفيةٍsecrecy ورقيبُناand our watcher لاnot يَشْعُرis aware
until we were reconciled—and contentment was his due—
in secret, while our watcher was unaware.
