ولمand did not أَنْسَI forget ماwhat عاينتُهُI beheld it منْof جمالِهhis beauty
وقدand had زرتُI visited فيin بعضِsome of اللياليthe nights مُصَلاَّهhis place of prayer
And I have not forgotten what I beheld of his beauty,
when one night I visited his place of prayer,
ويقرأُand he recites فيin المحرابِthe prayer niche والناسُand the people خَلْفَهbehind him
ولاand do not تقتلواyou kill النفسَthe soul التيthat حَرَّمَmade inviolable اللهGod
and he was reciting in the prayer niche, with the people behind him:
“And do not kill the soul that God has made inviolable.”
فقلتُso I said تأملْconsider ماwhat تقولُyou say فإنهfor it is
فَعالُكَyour doing ياO مَنْone whose تقتلُkill الناسَthe people عيناهhis two eyes
So I said, “Consider what you say, for it is
your own doing, O you whose eyes kill people.”
