أعرف غيرَ الجو لي سقف بيت

I have no bed but the earth, nor

do I know any roof for my home but the sky.

أكرم به سقفاً مصابيحه

تضيء من غير ذبال وزيت

How splendid a roof it is! Its lamps

It honors me with lamps lit bright

shine without wicks or oil.

Without wick or oil burning bright

كلّ امرءٍ يصغ لآماله

كلّ امرءٍ يصغ لآماله

فهي تناجيه بكيت وكيت

فهي تناجيه بكيت وكيت

Everyone listens to his hopes,

Each person listens to their hopes

and they whisper to him of this and that.

Whispering intimacies of sorrow and joy
