Indeed, ruthless time has bent, with its reversals,

my spear-shaft; time's reversals bend most harshly.

It shot me with bereavement's arrow, as a hostile adversary shoots,

and when it shot me, I shielded myself with no barrier.

When time reveals its guile against hopes,

say to the sons of hope: "Is there anyone to meet it in combat?"

At Qinnasrin's gate lies a beloved one's grave,

there at its gates, one of the dearest of beloved ones.

Her grave is at the junction of the three roads,

beside the rise among those jutting hillocks,

in a cluster of graves whose upright forms seem

like the forms of tents pitched close together.

Peace upon a grave that has held you, for it has held

beloved ones who have always been stars among the beloved.

And may no downpour pass it by without

the hands of rain granting it their most splendid gifts.

I am reproached for my eye's fulfilling its promise,

yet what excuse has an eye whose promise is unfulfilled?

My family urges me to be patient, yet each of them

has, in grief for you, a heart incapable of patience.

As though upon their livers and their hearts

were the blades of cutting tools, or leatherworkers' awls.

Grief has wasted us away, save for our inmost selves,

and even those selves are not safe from extinction.

He regards companionship, except in graveyards, as loneliness,

and counts dwelling in the wilderness a triumph.

You departed in the robes of youth, and left me

with the hands of calamities shaking me into gray-haired age.

And my joy would have been to go before you,

and for you to live on until counted among old women.

    فأصبح قدحي خائباً غيرَ فائز

    Thus my lot-casting arrow was a winner when you were mine;

but now my lot-casting arrow has failed, no longer a winner.
