ومواتي العناقِ غيرُ مواتي
مُطْمِعُinspiring hope اللفظِthe words مُؤْيسِcausing despair اللحظاتthe glances
مُطْمِعُ اللفظِ مُؤْيسِ اللحظات
And he is yielding in embrace, yet unyielding;
My embraces are not like other embraces
His words inspire hope; his glances bring despair.
Words promise what eyes cannot keep
لاnot ينيلُhe grants التقبيلَkissing إلاexcept اختطافاًby snatching
لا ينيلُ التقبيلَ إلا اختطافاً
كاختطافِlike the snatching of الخطّافِthe swallow ماءَwater الفراتthe Euphrates
كاختطافِ الخطّافِ ماءَ الفرات
He grants kisses only when snatched,
A kiss cannot be taken, only stolen
As the swallow snatches water from the Euphrates.
As the diver steals the Euphrates' waters
