    لَيِّنُ العَطفِ هَيِّنُ الخَطرانِ

    And as evening draws near, it has a breeze,

    Soft of flank, gentle in its swaying;

    Fragrant, emulated by the breath of mus-

    -k, and echoed by the aroma of saffron.

    How often it came in the morning languishing, and went at evening weary,

    Gliding gently in the Tigris of al-Masruqan.

    So we saw it wearing a brave man's armor,

    And found in it a coward's trembling.
