And a clever woman whom cleverness has schooled—
A clever girl, refined by wit,
The garden's adornments are borrowed from her face.
Who brings the meadow to bloom with her face like a loan,
أميرةُa princess حُسْنٍbeauty إذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) بَدَتْshe appeared
أقرَّacknowledged الأميرُthe prince لهاto her بالإمارَهas holding sovereignty
A princess of beauty—whenever she appears,
A princess of beauty, when she appears,
The prince acknowledges her sovereignty.
The prince acknowledges her reign,

كطاقةِlike a sprig of آسٍmyrtle علىupon جُلَّنارَهa pomegranate blossom
She came wearing her green garment,
She came in green attire,
Like a sprig of myrtle upon a pomegranate blossom.
Like the flap of a saddlecloth on a saddle,
فقلتُso I said لهاto her ماwhat اسمthe name of هذاthis اللباسِthe garment
فَرَدَّتْso she replied جواباًan answer بطرفِwith a witty turn of العبارهphrase
So I said to her, "What is this garment called?"
I asked her what's the name of this dress,
She replied with a witty turn of phrase:
She answered with a twist of eloquence,
شَقَقْناwe have split مرائرَgallbladders قومٍsome people بهwith it
فنحنُso we نُسَمِّيهcall it شقَّsplitting المرارهthe gallbladder
"We have split some people's gallbladders with it,
We have ripped open the chests of a people with it,
So we call it 'Gallbladder-Splitting.'"
So we call it the ripper of bitterness.
