أَلاah! حُرِستْmay it be guarded مِنْas a روضَةٍgarden قدindeed حَلَلْتُهاI have alighted in it

وقدand indeed رَقَّgrew gentle فيهاwithin it ماؤُهاits water وهَواؤُهاand its air
Ah, may the garden I have alighted in be guarded!
Alas! A garden I had entered was well guarded,
And its water and air have grown gentle within it.
Its water gentle and its air perfumed.
وقدand indeed أشْرَعتْsent forth فيهاwithin it الجَداوِلُthe streams جَرْيَهاtheir flow

And the streams have sent their flow forth within it,
Its streams raced on
toward trees whose growth comes from those streams.
To trees which gained their growth from it.
ولاحَand appeared لَناto us زَهرُthe blossoms الشَّقائِقِof the anemones يانِعاًin full bloom
كمِثْلjust like زُنُوجٍBlack Africans ضَرَّجَتْهاstained them دِماؤُهاtheir blood
And the anemones’ blossoms appeared to us in full bloom,
The anemones shone brightly for us
like Black Africans stained by their own blood.
Like lamps whose blood-red glow stained them.
فَمِنْso from كلِّevery قاعٍhollow أخضَرٍgreen وَشَقيقَةٍand an anemone
كَتِيبَةُa battalion حُسْنٍof beauty وهْيَand it is فيهاwithin it لِواؤُهاits banner
So from every green hollow and anemone
From every patch of green, every anemone,
comes a battalion of beauty, with the flower as its banner.
Came a battalion of beauty with its banners.
وَغَنَّتْand sang علىupon الأوراقِthe leaves وُرْقٌgray doves كأنَّهاas though they

And gray doves sang upon the leaves, as though
The leaves sang on the boughs
their song had lingered long to delight us.
As if to please us their song flowed long.
تَعجَّبْتُI marveled منهاat them أُلْبِسَتْwere clothed منfrom سَوادِهاtheir blackness

I marveled at them, clothed by their own blackness
I was astonished this blackness had put on mourning,
in mourning garb, while their weeping saddened hearts.
And its weeping had saddened all hearts.
وأعجَبُand more wondrous مِنْthan رَفْشِstirring (sense uncertain) المياهِthe waters وقصدِهاand their course
زُمُرُّدُemerald أشجارِof the trees الرُّباthe hills وهَوَاؤُهاand their air
And more wondrous than the waters’ stirring and their course
But stranger than the scattering of the waters
are the emerald trees of the hills and their air.
Was the emerald hue of the trees and their breeze.
