فيم عادَ الرِّضى أبا الفَتْحِ سُخْطا

فيم عادَ الرِّضى أبا الفَتْحِ سُخْطا

والدنوّ الذي عَهِدْناه شَحْطا

والدنوّ الذي عَهِدْناه شَحْطا

Why, Abu al-Fath, has favor turned to anger,

Why has pleasure with Abul Fath turned to wrath

and the closeness we knew to distance?

And the closeness we knew to abandonment?

أم لماذا نَقَضْتَ شَرْطَ أخٍ لا

أم لماذا نَقَضْتَ شَرْطَ أخٍ لا

ينقضُ الدهرُ للأخوّةِ شَرْطا

ينقضُ الدهرُ للأخوّةِ شَرْطا

Or why have you broken a brother’s pledge, though

Or why have you broken a pact with a brother

time breaks no pledge of brotherhood?

Whose brotherhood will not be broken by time?

تتخطَّى إلى التجني وما عذ

تتخطَّى إلى التجني وما عذ

رُ خليلٍ إلى التجنِّي تَخَطَّى

رُ خليلٍ إلى التجنِّي تَخَطَّى

You venture into unjust accusations—what excuse

You pass me by to draw near to another

has a close friend who ventures into unjust accusations?

No friend ever passed by a friend to draw near.

وتُغَطِّي الجفاءَ دوني فتأبى

وتُغَطِّي الجفاءَ دوني فتأبى

حركاتُ الجفاء أنْ تتَغَطَّى

حركاتُ الجفاء أنْ تتَغَطَّى

And you conceal your coldness from me, yet

You cover your coldness toward me and refuse

the gestures of coldness refuse to be concealed.

To allow the movements of coldness covered.

إن يكنْ لي تذكري الطاءَ جُرْمٌ

إن يكنْ لي تذكري الطاءَ جُرْمٌ

لا تَراني من بعدها أذكرُ الطَّا

لا تَراني من بعدها أذكرُ الطَّا

If my mentioning the letter ṭāʾ is an offense on my part,

If remembering our friendship is a crime,

you will not see me mention ṭāʾ after that.

After this you'll not see me remember at all.
