Abu Yusuf, you are the very model of an expert,

and of a sound, wise, discerning man.

You reconsidered your decision concerning our promise,

as one well versed in affairs would do.

So you failed to keep our appointment for wine,

when it was the key to the door of joy.

And you said: it is drunkenness that never ceases

to lead to every great calamity.

For while you see people as people, suddenly

there they are, seen in the hides of donkeys.

Am I safe from a man of wealth awakening

among them, having sunk below a pauper's lot,

and drunkenness stripping him of his dignity,

so he gives up his sheep and camel?

Am I safe from drunken brawling breaking out

between their elder and the young one,

so this one turns his eye that way,

and one wrenches another's heart out with a roar?

And am I safe from their day confronting them

    with a day of al-Haba'a and al-'Anqafir?

Then some are hurling shards of glass

among them, and some shielding themselves with mats.

And how many you see there charging forward,

    bold—and others frightened, seeking refuge!

And how many laid low, and how many wounded,

and how many maimed, and how many broken!

And suppose I am safe from this and do not

fear time and the passing of time:

    do I not fear a companion's creeping

at night to fuck a companion's young servant,

and spending the dark hours, while the spears of bellies

are planted in the shields of backs?

Is this so in the Gospel of Jesus,

in the Torah of Moses—by the truth of the Psalms?

So if you have not feared this, nor

looked at it with the mind's eye,

then you know what lies beyond it,

and a man of sense may be content with little.
