يومُa day بينٍof parting أَتاحَbrought ليto me يومَa day بوسِof misery
صرتُI became فيهduring it طوعاًsubmissive لأَمْرِto the command of النُّحوسِmisfortunes
A day of parting brought me a day of misery.
A day of insight allowed me a day of kisses
That day I became subject to the command of ill fortune.
In which I willingly obeyed ill-omened rules
أحمدٌAhmad بانَdeparted يومَthe day بانَdeparted بنفسيwith my soul
إِنَّindeed بينَthe parting of الأحبابِloved ones بينُthe parting of النفوسsouls
Ahmad departed; the day he departed, he took my soul with him.
Ahmad appeared, on the day he appeared with myself
Indeed, the parting of loved ones is the parting of souls.
Verily, between loved ones lies the intimacy of souls
لاdo not تلمنيblame me علىfor البكاءِweeping ودعنيand leave me be
حانthe time has come for إطلاقُreleasing دمعيَmy tears المحبوسpent-up
Do not blame me for weeping; leave me be.
Reproach me not for weeping, leave me be
The time has come to release my pent-up tears.
The hour has come to unleash my imprisoned tears
أوor تحنُّyearn البلدانُthe cities يوماًone day لحنَّتْwould surely yearn
حَلَبٌAleppo بعْدَهafter him إلىfor طَرَسوسTarsus
Or, should cities ever yearn, then so would
Will the countries ever pine as Ḥalab once pined
Aleppo, after his departure, for Tarsus.
To Tarṣūs beyond, in days of yore?
