إن كان في الصيفِ ريحانٌ وفاكهةٌ

فالأَرضُ مستوقَدٌ والجوُّ تَنّورُ
If summer has basil and fruit,
If there is basil and fruit in summer
then the earth is a furnace, and the air an oven.
The earth is inflamed and the air illuminated

And if in autumn the date palms are harvested,
And if the palm trees are flowering in autumn
then the earth is naked, and the air chilled.
The earth is bare and the air contracted

And if in winter the rain is unceasing,
And if in winter the rain is continuous
then the earth is confined, and the air confined.
The earth is restricted and the air restricted

Time is nothing but radiant spring; when
Time is only the bright spring when
spring arrives, blossoms and light come to you.
Spring comes, light and illumination come to you

The earth is a ruby, and the air a pearl;
The earth an emerald and the air a pearl
the greenery is turquoise, and the water crystal.
And the plants turquoise and the water crystalline

ما يعدمُ النبتُ كأساً من سحائِبهِ

فالنبتُ ضربان سكرانٌ وَمَخمور
The greenery never lacks a cup from spring's clouds;
The plants never lack a cup from its clouds
so the greenery is of two kinds: drunk and wine-dazed.
So the plants are twofold—intoxicated and fermented

For us there the rose, folded, girded
between the sitting places, and stock-flowers are scattered.
Between the gatherings and scattered when scattered

though itself bewitched by blindness of the eyes.
If it from the blindness of sights is bewitched

The clouds keep scattering their pearls in it;
The clouds therein keep shedding their pearls
so the earth is laughing, and the birds delighted.
So the earth is laughing and the birds delighted

Blessed be God! How sweet spring is! So do not
Blessed is God—how sweet is spring! But do not
be deceived, for one who compares it with summer is deluded.
Be fooled, for its harvest fails in summer

In it, the deserts are pleasant to one dwelling there,
The plateaus smell sweet in it for one staying there
as houses are pleasant to him at other times.
As homes smell sweet for him in others

In every land where we alight in it, there is a country estate;
In every land we descended intoxicated
on every height we climb in it, there is a tavern.
On every back we mounted alert
