Have you seen anything lovelier than the eyes of the narcissus,

or than their exchanging glances amid the gathering?

Pearls split open to reveal rubies upon

emerald stems, above carpets of fine silk.

    Camphor eyelids, endowed with eyes

of saffron, soft to the touch.

And they seem like moons of night encircling

suns in cloudy gloom, upon a smooth branch.

    Tear-brimmed in their shimmering shade,

they gaze like a keenly discerning watcher.

And when the winds envelop them, they breathe

    forth a scent like musk—what a breath!

And their closeness to one another mirrored,

one day, the closeness of one companion to another.

This one and that embraced in a gathering

out of love, while those embraced in a planting bed.

And when you grow drowsy from wine, you see them

gazing at you with eyes that have not grown drowsy.

Are those, then, lovelier, or moon-bright daisies

    opposite that sun-bright yellow oxeye?

    O cupbearer, whose glances

have become charged with seizing souls,

you have cast my heart between a glance that kindles hope

for affection from you, and a word that brings despair.
