    What dogs without collars!

And what oxen without any yoke!

And what an ass—if I were accustomed to

crossing the breadth of the wilderness on an ass!

Tell Abu Talib, and tell Abu

Idris, in words allied with eloquence:

Like boats—such a thing cannot be

    without pitch or nails.

If, by your own reckoning, you are Arabs,

    according to measures and proportions,

then between the Nabataeans and the Arabs—the

pure-blooded—there is only the cutting off of girdles.

May copper coins yield no bounty! How often they are struck

unjustly with the die of gold dinars.

By God, the moth will never approach the

    firebrand except with reckless daring.

And even if the lion should stumble, that lapse would be ransomed

with a thousand dogs and a thousand pigs.

So do not let bodies deceive you when

they come to you like heavily laden palm trees.

Make for the bathhouse door: there you will find

    pictures of every kind.

You have come to a rock, butting against it—

woe to you—with a body of glass vessels!

And how can he hope to reach my shore—the one

I have drowned in the seas of my devastation?

Between his nape and my palm lies what

    lies between plectra and lutes.

If I lampoon the likes of you, then sometimes

the hawk takes delight in sparrows.
