شَرقَتْchoked مدامعُهُhis tear ducts بفَيضِwith the flood دُموعهhis tears
إذwhen ضاقَgrew distressed ذرْعاًin endurance فيin الهوىlove بخضوعِهِby his submission
His tear ducts choked on the flood of his tears,
His tears flowed copiously with the outpouring of his weeping,
when he could no longer bear his submission in love.
When love's devotion constrained him utterly.
ماnot زالceased يذرفُsheds دمعَهhis tears فيupon خدِّهِhis cheek
حتىuntil تَخدَّدَbecame furrowed خدُّهُhis cheek بنجيعهwith his blood
He kept shedding his tears upon his cheek,
He kept shedding tears on his cheek continuously,
until his cheek was furrowed by his blood.
Until his cheek was furrowed with its tracks.
أَلِفَgrew accustomed to السُّهادَsleeplessness فماso not يلائمُfinds congenial مضجعاًa bed
مذsince حيلa barrier was set بينbetween جفونِهhis eyelids وهجوعِهand his slumber
He grew accustomed to sleeplessness and finds no bed congenial,
He has gotten used to wakefulness, so no bed agrees with him,
since a barrier was set between his eyelids and his slumber.
Since between his eyelids and sleep came an obstacle.
للهGod! (in wonder) ماwhat صنعَhas done الهوىlove بمتَيَّمٍto a love-stricken man
زفراتُهhis sighs تَسْتَنُّrace بينbetween ضلوعِهhis ribs
God! What love has done to a love-stricken man,
What has love done to one broken by passion!
whose sighs race between his ribs!
His sighs can be discerned among his ribs.

Do not listen to the slanderers' words, for
Do not listen to the words of slanderers, for
no ear of mine has heeded that report.
No ear has listened to their vile, false stories.
فلقدfor indeed أطلعتِyou made rise الهجرَestrangement فيَّwithin me تعمّداًdeliberately
علماًknowing بأنيthat I فيكconcerning you غيرnot مُطيعِهobedient to it
For you have deliberately made estrangement rise within me,
You have set separation over me deliberately,
knowing that, where you are concerned, I do not obey it.
Knowing full well that I cannot disobey you.

So on the day of parting I praised its secret workings,
I praised the day we parted for its mysterious deed,
and on the day of reunion I condemned its fine handiwork.
And blamed the day we came together for its foul act.

She lowers the veil over a radiant face, as though it were
You offer me a drink of tears as if it were
the full moon of the sky, shining at its rise.
The full moon that illuminates at its rising.

And you see a rose upon her cheek; whenever
On her cheek you see a rose that, whenever
she reveals it, Time tires of the roses of its spring.
She reveals it, fills the world with the bloom of spring.
