وانتُزعتْand was uprooted دَوحتيَmy spreading tree المورقهْleafy
My lovely garden has withered,
My blossoming garden is now barren,
and my leafy, spreading tree has been uprooted.
My leafy trees are now stripped bare,
بابٌa gate إلىto الجنَّةParadise وَدَّعتُهُI bade it farewell
منذsince رأيتُI saw الموتَdeath قدalready أغلقهhad closed it
I bade farewell to a gate to Paradise,
A gate to heaven I've bid farewell,
since I saw that death had closed it.
Since I saw death has shut it tight.
لاmay not يبعَدَنْbe forsaken مثواكِyour resting place ياO أمِّmy mother ماhow
أبعدَfar مثواكِyour resting place وماand how اسحقهremote it is
May your resting place never be forsaken, O my mother—how
May your grave not be far, O mother mine,
far your resting place is, and how remote it is!
Far from your grave, how devastated I'd be!
قدindeed صدَّقconfirmed الموتُdeath الذيwhat لمnot أزلْI ceased
أحذَرُهI fear it فيكِfor you وقدand indeed حقَّقهmade it real
Death has confirmed what I never ceased
Death I always feared has come true,
to fear for you, and has made it real.
Taking you away, the truth revealed.

My innards are troubled as I lie in bed
Thoughts of your frail form trouble me,
by my remembrance of your tormented innards,
As I lay down recalling your agony.
وَحَمْلَكِand your bearing السُّقْمَillness وأعباءَهُand its burdens

and your bearing illness and its burdens
You bore the burden of illness and pain
in a body weaker than an asphodel stalk.
In a body weaker than gossamer thin.

مجدِّداًrenewing أحزانيَmy sorrows المخلقهworn-out
God, what a mother! Grief for her never ceases
O mother, how endless is the sorrow
to renew my worn-out sorrows.
That renews my deep anguish within!
كمhow many أودعَتْshe lodged أُذنيَmy ear منof أنَّةٍa moan

How many a moan she lodged in my ear,
How many moans poured into my ear
each lodging a scorching ember in my heart,
Leaving within my heart a blaze seared.

and many a complaint I had more right to voice,
Had I known your doubts, I'd have been first
its arrows loosed into my liver.
To loose my arrows straight into your heart.
أَقولُI say والأنفاسُwhile the breaths قدalready صاعدتْhave risen
فيin الصَّدرthe chest منهاfrom her وهيwhile she كالمُطرِقهlike one with bowed head
I say, as her breaths rise
I say this as my breath ascends
in her chest, while she is like one with head bowed:
Within my chest, heavy as lead.

O fates of death, how can I escape with her
O Death, how can I escape your grip
from her anguish, while they encircle her?
When you stare fixedly with evil grin?

She who would shrink away if she saw darkness,
Who can avoid seeing the darkness
I lodged her in layers of enveloping darkness.
That I've lodged in this lightless tomb?
ومنand she who تضيقُis narrow الأرضthe earth فيin عينهاher sight
I gave her as a gift للحفرةto the pit الضيِّقهnarrow
And she in whose sight the earth seemed cramped,
How the earth shrinks in her eyes,
I gave her to the narrow pit.
As I place her in a narrow, drear room.

منof الثرىthe soil غيرَother than الضمينthe guarantor الثقهtrustworthy
O lifeblood, I overstepped and entrusted you
O darling, I've been severed from you,
to the soil, no trustworthy guardian.
Holding you in soil, not in arms that care.

Why did my soul willingly give you up, when
Why did you make me love you so,
I had known it to be tender and compassionate?
When I knew you were soon to go?

May a rain cloud weep over the soil where you lie,
The soil weeps where you now lay,
its eyes brimming with tears.
Its tears like pearls in bright array.
ولاand may not خلاbe empty منof زاهرٍa flowering plant مشرقٍradiant
مبتسمٍsmiling عنto reveal زهرةa blossom مُشرقَهradiant
And may it never lack a radiant flowering plant,
No blossom smiles from where you sleep,
smiling to reveal a radiant blossom.
No radiant flower for one who weep.
