أحضُرْcome فإنّاfor we إلىuntil أنْthat
أحضُرْ فإنّا إلى أنْ
تهوىyou desire الحضورَattendance جلوسُseated
تهوى الحضورَ جلوسُ
Come, for until
Come, for we sit long
you wish to join us, we remain seated
Till yearning for company comes;
فيin مجلسٍa gathering ماnot يُباليcares
في مجلسٍ ما يُبالي
ماwhat قالsaid فيهin it الجليسthe companion
ما قال فيه الجليس
in a gathering that takes no heed
In a gathering where none cares
of what a companion says there.
What the companion has said.
ماno فوقناabove us قَهْرَمانٌa steward
ما فوقنا قَهْرَمانٌ
ولاand no عليناover us رئيسa chief
ولا علينا رئيس
No steward is above us,
None rules over us,
and no chief is over us.
Nor presides among us.
وعندناand we have جَرْدَناجٌjardanāj, a prepared dish
وعندنا جَرْدَناجٌ
وعندناand we have خَنْدَريسaged wine
وعندنا خَنْدَريس
And we have jardanāj,
We have wine and music here,
and we have aged wine.
Food, drink and all that we need.
ولمand did not يَفُتْناpass us by مَصوصٌmaṣūṣ, meat prepared with vinegar
ولم يَفُتْنا مَصوصٌ
ولمand did not يَفُتْناpass us by قَريسqarīs, a chilled jellied dish
ولم يَفُتْنا قَريس
Nor have we lacked maṣūṣ,
No bore misses us,
nor have we lacked qarīs,
No killjoy mourns our mirth.
ولاnor الكبابُthe kebab الرُّشَيْديRashīdī-style
ولا الكبابُ الرُّشَيْدي
ولاnor الرُّقاقُthe thin flatbread الكبيسpressed
ولا الرُّقاقُ الكبيس
nor Rashīdī kebab,
No barley gruel here,
nor pressed thin flatbread.
Nor insipid broth.
تجريcirculate مَقاليfrying pans العصافيthe sparrows (word continues)
تجري مَقالي العصافي
رِcompletion of ‘sparrows’ بينناamong us والكؤوسand the cups
رِ بيننا والكؤوس
Pans of fried sparrows circulate
Idle words flow freely
among us, as do the cups.
Among us, and the cups.
وليسand there is no ثَمَّthere اختصاصٌexclusive possession
وليس ثَمَّ اختصاصٌ
ماnot اختصَّclaimed an exclusive share إِلاَّexcept خسيسa base person
ما اختصَّ إِلاَّ خسيس
And there is no keeping things for oneself;
None claims exclusiveness here,
only a base fellow claims an exclusive share.
Save the morose and mean.
فاقربْso draw near فقُرْبُكَfor your nearness ماthat which لاnot
فاقربْ فقُرْبُكَ ما لا
تَعْتاضُaccept a substitute منهfor it النفوسsouls
تَعْتاضُ منه النفوس
So draw near, for your nearness is something
Come close, for closeness now
for which souls accept no substitute.
Offends no bashful heart.
واغْنَمْand seize سروراًjoy فإنfor indeed الthe (continued on the next line)
واغْنَمْ سروراً فإن ال
سُّرورَjoy غُنْمٌa gain نَفيسprecious
سُّرورَ غُنْمٌ نَفيس
And seize some joy, for
Make merry, for making merry
joy is a precious gain.
Is a precious prize to gain.
