يا أسرعَ الناسِ في حثّي على الكاسِ

وأرغبَ الناسِ في قربي وإِيناسي

O swiftest of all in urging me to the cup,

O quickest of people to urge me to the goblet,

and keenest of all to be near me and keep me company,

And most eager of people for my company and intimacy,

لو اطَّلَعْتُ على ما في ضميرك مِنْ

لو اطَّلَعْتُ على ما في ضميرك مِنْ

شوقٍ لما هبتُ أنْ أسعى على راسي

شوقٍ لما هبتُ أنْ أسعى على راسي

if I saw what your heart held of

If I knew the yearning in your conscience

longing, I would not fear to run on my head,

For me, I would not hasten to please you.

حتى أُجاريكَ في ميدانِ لهوكَ ما

حتى أُجاريكَ في ميدانِ لهوكَ ما

أطاقتِ اللهوَ في الميدان أفراسي

أطاقتِ اللهوَ في الميدان أفراسي

to keep pace with you in the arena of your revelry, as long as

Until I race you in the field of your amusement

my steeds could endure revelry in the arena,

My steeds cannot race amusement in the field.

مُواصلاً قهوةً يغدو مُواصِلُها

مُواصلاً قهوةً يغدو مُواصِلُها

ريَّانَ من طمعٍ ظمآنَ من ياس

ريَّانَ من طمعٍ ظمآنَ من ياس

continually drinking wine whose constant drinker becomes

Drinking coffee whose drinker at dawn

quenched by hope, parched by despair.

Is overflowing with greedy hope, thirsty with despair,

أعِزُّ عزَّ كُلَيْبٍ حينَ أشربُها

أعِزُّ عزَّ كُلَيْبٍ حينَ أشربُها

وربّما فتكتْ بي فتكَ جسَّاس

وربّما فتكتْ بي فتكَ جسَّاس

I am mighty with Kulayb’s might when I drink it,

I cherish drinking it more than all of Kilab’s glory

yet sometimes it slays me as Jassas slew.

And sometimes it may slay me, a sudden slaying.
