Stand at the dwellings; the tears pour abundantly.
Stop at the dwellings though the tears are flowing
And weep over the ruins, for the people have departed.
And weep for the ruins though the tribe has marched on

You are free of blame, for the pale camels have had
You were left behind, so weep as the camel litter
Their padded feet shod with sleeplessness, with fire above it.

It wanders freely as though the journey has eased it
And their limbs, my friend, are indeed bowstrings.
Yet its extremities, O my friend, are strings drawn taut

It circles in pain, filled with longing, no wonder
For among livestock there may indeed be birds.
Beasts of burden can sometimes show wings in flight

Lost from the watering holes, turning from the pasture
From pasture, so no dwelling is found for them.
No home left for it, though home be ordained and bound

Do not be shy of sorrow if grief assails you
Even if Sinjar should confront them on their journey.
Not even if in your course it is Sañjar brings this grief

A lord through whom countryside and cities were ennobled:
Is he who gave glory to country and town
