She wept, and for her the necklace and the throat wept;
The beads and sacrifice wept bitterly for her,
a maiden whose four years were followed by ten.
A girl just past fourteen years,

She wept when she saw that I had resolved to depart,
She wept when she saw I was bent on leaving,
and she moaned, the strand of tears scattered on her cheek.
And you, tears flowed down her cheek in streams.

Once she knew that I was in earnest, she clung
When she knew I was serious she clung
to my robe, while perfume wafted from her sleeves.
To my robe, and from her sleeves wafted perfume.

She rose and drew me to her breast in an embrace;
She got up and pressed me against her chest in an embrace,
my breast felt heat from the fire of her anguish.
My chest appeared aflame from the burning of her agony.

She said, whither goes your journey when I
have only lately known you? This is no way to part.
Still new to our love, how can this be our parting?

At that moment my gaze happened to turn back,
At that glance my eyes welled for her
with embers from the fire of parting from her in my heart.
And in my mind her burning stirred up embers.

I said: Abandonment—from a lover filled with longing,
I said, though loath to part from a lover and intimate
who finds prohibitions and commands sweet in loving you?
Who delights in your love and command,

He wants to leave though love still grips his heart
attempts what white swords and brown spears cannot do.
He tries what neither white nor black can achieve.

loathed my dwellings when the wilderness became sweet to me.
I hated my home when the wilderness enticed me.

I will traverse the desert aiming for more desert
and ride the sea's depths, so that the sea may give generously.
And ride the turbulent sea however stormy.

On a swift steed whose sight challenges sights
and runs as tawny gazelles run across their level plain.
Dashing like a frightened ostrich with fluttering wings.

It ran as a male ostrich runs, and reached no water
Galloping like a dark night without a moon,
save mirage—no dew there, nor rain.
Its ships the wheeling planets, its lamps the blossoming stars.

It struck the rocky ground until fountains sprang forth
its ships the heavenly spheres and the radiant stars.
And from them surged waters though dawn had not come.

It struck the desert rock until there burst forth
It flew like a mother ostrich calling her chick
springs for it from the rock, before dawn had risen.
Though it had fallen from the nest and could not return.

And it flew like the gray dove who yearned for her fledgling
I said gently, gently, for truly it is
and called it, without food, when the nest had fallen.
Beyond an eagle's reach however it soars.

A breeze from their dwellings will surely guide me
to an abode where, if I reach it, reward is assured.
To the ruins, a secret spirit stirs in its dust.

And his basil blossom—how often the pure Ahmad smelled it,
He bears the noble resemblance to half of Mohammed
so fragrance wafted to him from the purity of his origin.
While the handsome, pure Fatimah won the rest.

and the pure youth Hasan won the remainder.

the breast of the Chosen One, the Elect, embraced them both.
How strange that time has wronged them so!

of the youths of the gardens of eternity, as the account relates.

and twin showers of generous bounty when rain is stingy.
You will be sated, and grasp in your palms a share of their excellence.

So in every heart a fire from it blazes,
Generosity wept because you fell to the earth
and in every breast is heat from its flaming.
Until now its tears flow unchecked by betrayal's sword.

Existence wept when you fell upon the dust;
If the lashes wept water at your loss
to this day, the pools supplying its tear-duct have not run dry.
Then the horizon's eyes wept tears of crimson.

those eyes of the horizon shed red tears.
Good flipped to evil and order turned on its head.

Black tribulations have befallen the world
so it strayed from goodness, and the order of things was reversed.
Covering each heart in the darkness of their veil.

For none like you can ever withstand war's flash flood.

For a throat should shield one like you on the day of battle.

And at daybreak, O people of the Prophet, he stood at your door
for Time's savage fang and claw are lodged in him.
While rivers of tears flowed from his every cheek.
