فَكَم في البَين مِن قَلب كَليم
Sa'da departed, so I said to her: Stay.
My joy passed away, so I called to her: stay!
For how many hearts lie wounded in parting!
How many a suffering heart yearns when loved ones stray.
أَقيميstay للنواحfor lamentation وَساعِديناand help us
أَقيمي للنواح وَساعِدينا

Stay for the lamentation, and help us
Stay to mourn with us, help us in our grief profound,
With grief abiding in our inmost depths.
For sorrow dwells with us and will not leave this ground.

Do you not know, O Sa'da, of a full moon
Know you not, my joy, of Badr in his prime?
That appeared at the summit of true glory?
A bright star risen to fame's lofty clime.

Then the nights carried him off after his fullness
The nights concealed him after his acclaim,
And the radiance of his handsome face.
That noble face no more shines as it came.

مَشَت في غَير نَهج مُستَقيم
May God curse them—those grievous calamities
God spared him from life’s darkest, bleakest days.
That walked a path that was not straight.
He walked not long in misdirected ways.

They acted unjustly and left no joy,
To ruin he went, no happiness he bore,
And grazed freely in their baleful pasture.
He grazed in pastures growing ever more poor.

Do you not know with what resolve he stayed,
And what great young man they slew?
And what great man by fate he was waylaid?

Fallen is the star that never ceased to soar
The star that rose and brilliance did attain
And rise among the heights of age-old excellence.
From excellence of olden days again,

He passed away, and the heart's regions turned black,
Has gone, and left my heart enshrouded in gloom
As though Hell's fire burned at its side.
As if the fires of Hell had lit its tomb.

Beauties vanished beneath the earth, and so
The earth has claimed graces that adorned this life,
The depths of the soil found bliss through them.
Though in its soil they dwell in tranquil strife.

We shall weep for Salih with a heart of sorrow
With grieving hearts we'll weep for one so good,
And tears streaming from our eyes.
Our streaming tears a long somber flood.

And weeping does not help one who is lost,
For one departed tears bring no relief.
Nor does lamentation avail one who is gone.
Dirges for the lost assuage no grief.

But there is a burning anguish in the breast;
Yet burning in the breast hot tears will course
Its essence flows from the ailing heart.
From anguished heart their bitter force.

God's mercy ever flows compassionate.
Upon him from the bounty of a generous Lord.
It is a noble gift, a bounty great.

Ah, who will carry our words to his father,
Deliver him this message, stalwart friend,
Khalil, a man of sound heart?
If you've a heart that's virtuous to the end:

Be patient, and seek God's reward for a lion cub
With fortitude, Shabal, his loss withstand,
Who has alighted in the pasture of the all-knowing Lord.
Rest in the care of God's almighty hand.

And be gladdened by the reward, kept well,
Though heavy blows should on you worthless fall,
Though you now face a grievous calamity.
Let promised rewards your spirit recall.

And kindness from the Self-Sufficient, the Forbearing.
With grace and mercy from His throne you touch.

Forgiveness fills your history's brightest page,
Bringing him glad tidings of the gardens of bliss.
It ushers you to Paradise's stage.
