O best of those who dwelt on unconsecrated ground and in the sanctuary,

And who surpassed all creation in generosity and nobility,

How much glory and how great a retinue appeared for you!

And on the day of Mecca, when you appeared among multitudes,

The passes through rough ground and plain are too narrow for them.

Companies before whom lofty, proud noses bowed,

And the chiefs of those who saw them bowed, out of prudent regard for them.

Their banners, with which they were adorned on the day of combat,

Fluttering, too vast for East and West to contain,

Amid a towering cloud of dust from horses and camels.

Battalions of which reports have told, drawing on books,

Blazing, led to war by the best of sons,

    وَجَحفل قَذف الأَرجاء ذي لجب

    Charging in capture and pursuit did not weary them;

And a great army, its flanks far-flung, full of clamour,

Immense, like the vastness of night unfurled.

God honours them with victory and success,

And in their straits, beyond doubt, He shows them mercy.

And how could the Lord disgrace them and deprive them,

While you—may God bless you—lead them,

In a hall aglow with perfect light from you?

Clad in the armour of glory, seated with knees drawn up,

As though you were a fierce, mighty lion standing erect,

And you, O you who surpassed non-Arabs and Arabs,

    Shine aloft, radiant-faced and chosen,

    Crowned with mighty victory, advancing.

Through you, the faith found both its seal and its beginning,

And idolatry's upright pillar bowed because of you.

As though I beheld you, my lord—not seated with knees drawn up—

    Rising before God's troops, wearing

The robe of dignity, obedient to God's command.

God's tranquillity, O guide, rained down upon you,

And from you the sun of noble heights left its mark among mankind.

And when God's troops formed ranks and stood arrayed,

They bowed beneath the splendour of glory, at the rising

Of awe through you, as one humble and fearful bows.

You favoured Mecca and the sanctuary on the day of conquest,

With the tread of your sandal, O you who rose in glory.

And the House had been weeping blood before that,

And heaven's angels exchanged glad tidings of what

You possessed, when from it you attained hope's utmost goal.

You came to the multitudes of God's faith, best of the devout,

With what surpasses the deluge and drowning.

So, because of your troops, the East's faction lies sleepless,

And the earth trembles with pride and fear,

And the sky glows radiant with delight.

Kings upon their thrones acknowledged you,

And the leaders of dominion were fettered in their reins.

And victory's full measure came in its entirety,

And the horses prance proudly in their reins,

And the pale camels stream proudly amid coils of braided ropes.
