جاءَcame بِالحَقwith the truth صاحبpossessor of المعراجthe Ascension
جاءَ بِالحَق صاحب المعراج
فَهَداناso he guided us بِنورهby his light الوَهاجradiant
فَهَدانا بِنوره الوَهاج
He of the Ascension came with the truth,
The one who ascended to the highest came with the truth
so he guided us by his radiant light.
So he guided us with his blazing light
جَمعunited الحسنbeauty وَالبَسالةand valor فيهin him
جَمع الحسن وَالبَسالة فيه
فَهوَso he is بَدرfull moon الوَرىhumankind وَلَيثand lion الهياجthe tumult of battle
فَهوَ بَدر الوَرى وَلَيث الهياج
He united beauty and valor within himself,
He combined goodness and courage
so he is humankind’s full moon and the lion of the fray.
Thus he is the full moon of existence and lion of thickets
جَنةa garden زينتwas adorned بعلمwith knowledge وَحلمand forbearance
جَنة زينت بعلم وَحلم
وَوَقارand dignity وَعصمةand sinlessness وَابتهاجand joy
وَوَقار وَعصمة وَابتهاج
A garden adorned with knowledge and forbearance,
A garden adorned with knowledge, wisdom
and dignity, and sinlessness, and joy.
Dignity, integrity and delight
جلبbrought الرُشدright guidance للأنامto humankind فَأَضحىso he became
جلب الرُشد للأنام فَأَضحى
لِظَلامfor the darkness القُلوبhearts أَبهىmost radiant سِراجlamp
لِظَلام القُلوب أَبهى سِراج
He brought right guidance to humankind and thus became
He brought righteousness to people so he became
the most radiant lamp for the darkness of hearts.
For the darkness of hearts the most radiant lamp
جَعَلَmade اللَهGod مَهبطplace of descent السرthe secret فيهin him
جَعَلَ اللَه مَهبط السر فيه
فَحَماهso He protected him عَنfrom خطةscheme الإِخراجexpulsion
فَحَماه عَن خطة الإِخراج
God set within him the place where the secret descends,
God made him the descending place of the secret so He protected him
and thus protected him from the scheme of expulsion.
From the danger of disclosure
جهلwere ignorant of الناسthe people قَدرهhis worth كَيفhow يَدريhe discerns
جهل الناس قَدره كَيف يَدري
أكمهone born blind القلبthe heart درةa pearl فيin زُجاجglass
أكمه القلب درة في زُجاج
People did not know his worth—how could one discern,
The people do not know his value how would they know
born blind of heart, a pearl within glass?
That the heart conceals a pearl in glass
جملsummations الفَضلof excellence فَصلتwere detailed فيin علاهhis eminence
جمل الفَضل فَصلت في علاه
فَتَولىso undertook بَيانهاtheir exposition كُلevery ناجone who is saved
فَتَولى بَيانها كُل ناج
The full array of virtues was unfolded in his eminence,
He gathered all virtues so they connected in his ascent
so every saved soul undertook to expound them.
Thus every confidant took on explaining them
جزمbecame certain القَلبthe heart أنهthat he فيin المَعاليthe heights of glory
جزم القَلب أنه في المَعالي
دُرةa pearl قَدindeed تَلألَأتglittered فَوقَabove تاجa crown
دُرة قَد تَلألَأت فَوقَ تاج
The heart was certain that, in the heights of glory, he was
The heart was certain that he in the highest qualities
a pearl that had glittered above a crown.
Is a pearl gleaming atop a crown
جانبshunned الغمضsleep فيin ظَلامthe darkness اللَياليthe nights
جانب الغمض في ظَلام اللَيالي
فَهوَso he is كَالبَدرlike the full moon فيin ظَلامthe darkness الدَياجيthe dark nights
فَهوَ كَالبَدر في ظَلام الدَياجي
He shunned sleep in the darkness of the nights,
He turned away from blindness in the darkness of nights
so he is like the full moon in the gloom of dark nights.
Thus he is like the full moon in the darkness of wilds
جاههhis influence يُرتَجىis hoped for لِكُلfor every عَظيمweighty matter
جاهه يُرتَجى لِكُل عَظيم
وَأَناand I فيamong العِبادthe servants أَولthe first راجone who hopes
وَأَنا في العِباد أَول راج
His influence is looked to for every weighty matter,
His glory is hoped for, for every great one
and I, among the servants, am the first to hope.
And I, among the servants, am the first hopeful
